5 Signs it’s time to update your headshot (and how to do it the right way)

Sign #1. You look different than your current profile photo
If it’s been more than 5-10 years since you’ve updated your photo, or your hairstyle, weight, age, or look has changed significantly, your headshot might not feel like an accurate representation of you anymore. And outdated profile photo might send the wrong message, especially on LinkedIn, your own website or when applying for a speaking gig.

Sign #2. YOUR HEADSHOT DOES NOT MATCH YOUR BRAND
Your photo should align with your audience, your industry and definitely your personality. Here’s an example: a therapist might want to appear approachable and calm, while a creative director may want to show boldness and edge and action.
Ask yourself: Does my current photo reflect the type of work I want to attract?

Sign #3. The photo quality is well… not professional
We’ve all seen super pixelated or just bad photos on LinkedIn and there’s no shame b/c not all of us have had the opportunity to have professional photos of ourselves done. Blurry, dark, heavily filtered, or cropped group shots don’t do you justice. Your headshot should look polished and intentional — it’s a visual representation of your professionalism and an extension of your brand.
Good headshots and branding images should have a crisp focus, a natural expression, clean background and thoughtful lighting.

SIGN #4. You’re growing, pivoting careers, or re-branding
If you’re stepping into a new role at work, launching a new business, or putting yourself out there in different ways, your image should evolve with where you’re heading. A strong headshot supports your visibility and helps you show up with confidence.
“Stephanie’s deep understanding of my career and values allowed her to capture not just images but a narrative—one that reflects my identity as a global executive at the intersection of culture, creativity, and leadership.” -Ian Alden Russell

Sign #5. It’s been 5-10 years since your last Headshot
Even if your overall look hasn’t changed much, your style and energy probably has. Your headshot should be renewed every 2-3 years to stay fresh and relevant. Plus, posting new images of yourself always makes you more visible and drums up conversations.
