Color Crush

A few years ago I met Gretchen Mayhew at a networking group for professional moms. She caught my attention with the bold colors she was rocking and a bright attitude to go with them. A House of Colors consultant, she was there to present to the group on keeping life colorful. She stood before us tall and confident and one by one she started removing her colors. She kicked off her red heels, plucked out her blue earrings and wiped off her red lip. Left with the basics she quickly demonstrated her point, color is EVERYTHING.

As a photographer, I often throw on the stereotypical all-black uniform that takes the decision making out of getting ready and helps me blend into a shoot. This moment, this demonstration of what color offers our lives shifted not only my vision for photography, it lit up a whole new perspective for myself. Color sets a mood. It lends us under-the-radar brightness and confidence. In some way I always knew this, but never embraced it until Gretchen made the point clear. I need more color in my life! We all do, because, my beautiful friends, we were born to stand out!

I set up a consultation with Gretchen and she paired me with colors I would have NEVER entertained wearing. Kingfisher Blue. Chestnut Brown. Coral. These are a far cry from my olive greens and blacks. I am embracing these new hues and exploring my color palette. It’s inspiring me to play with how I can bring the energy of color to my clients. Keely, my stylist, has always been attuned to what colors work best on clients (she believes there is a shade of every color just right for everyone), but this has me swirling with ideas about personalized backdrops based on my client’s best colors to highlight their best features.

Bright Perspectives

“I love color and know the powerful effect it has on how I look and feel. Keely and I met to go over the wardrobe for the shoot and I introduced her to a section of my closet -- I added some dark colors but I also had vibrant colors. To my delight, the vibrant colors made the cut. In fact, I was invited to bring in some colorful scarves to perhaps use to accentuate the pieces we'd chosen. I took the shoes and scarfs I'd really wear with me (read more color) and Keely, Miranda and Steph summoned their magic and created what I had hoped for.” - Marcia Coné, PhD

More important than wardrobe updates and shoot inspo is that this was the affirming and confidence boosting experience I needed right now. I can't recommend it enough. Anyone can benefit from the energy color brings. If you’ve been feeling monotone and stuck, I urge you to explore your own color palette and then book a shoot to show off your fresh glow!
